In the summer of 2022, children in São Tomé had limited recreational opportunities. Inspired by the generosity of German, Spanish, and French visitors in 2021 and 2022, who donated tennis rackets and about 150 tennis balls, we decided to take action.
Initially, tennis was played occasionally without a structured program. But as summer arrived, we mobilized resources and organized regular lessons to introduce tennis to local youth.
The Many Benefits of Tennis
Tennis offers numerous physical, mental, and social benefits:

Visitors are always welcome!
Playing with Foreign Visitors
Our tennis club frequently welcomes tourists from Europe and Central Africa, thanks to our sponsor, a local travel agency. Visitors from France, Germany, and Spain have joined us to play with the kids, fostering self-confidence and cross-cultural friendships.
A Tournament Coming Soon
We are currently teaching technical tennis skills, including forehand, backhand, serving, and playing at the net. Students are also learning the rules and scoring system.
We’re preparing for a small tournament in the summer of 2023, where winners will receive tennis rackets as prizes.
Meet the Tennis Players
Thanks to the dedication of Professor Lúcio, many children from Bairro do Hospital were already familiar with tennis. For years, he taught tennis to local kids every Saturday. Today, one of his former students has stepped up as a young coach, carrying forward his legacy.

A Special Visit from a Former ATP Star
We had the privilege of meeting a famous tennis player during his visit to São Tomé. While his identity remains confidential for now, his wife expressed interest in our program and promised to return. The kids may soon have the opportunity to play with this tennis icon—an unforgettable inspiration!
