The CACAE chess club began in 2018 when the founder, feeling unwell and visited by local youth, decided to teach chess as a way to engage the mind. What started with an impromptu lesson for five teenagers quickly grew into a passion, and those first students are now among the club's strongest players.
In Spring 2020, we hosted an event in a local shop, responding to Agadmator's challenge with open chess training. Following the event, chess boards were left behind, and soon, local kids started playing at night outside the shop. This sparked a wave of excitement, with younger players challenging older ones and new talents beginning to emerge.
THE MANY BENEFITS OF CHESS
Chess offers a range of personal and social benefits, including improved concentration, enhanced problem-solving skills, and boosted self-confidence. It encourages abstract thinking, strategic planning, and complex decision-making. Socially, chess fosters fair play, respect for others, and leadership, particularly when players teach the game to others. Overall, it is an excellent tool for personal growth and building positive social interactions.
CLUB TOURNAMENTS
Our goal is to reward each motivated player with a chess set to take home, celebrating their dedication and progress. While we don’t currently offer tournaments, we plan to organize them in the future as part of our efforts to create more competitive opportunities. So far, the club’s activities have been successful, with strong participation and enthusiasm from our members.
NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS
In order to send our young players to compete with other players, we registered our club with the National Santomean Chess Federation, the FEXA.
As often as possible, we send our player to participate in the local tournaments, thus playing against stroner players, and increasing their skills.
PLAYING WITH STUDENTS FROM PORTUGAL
In 2023, we had the pleasure of welcoming students and teachers from Oporto English School in Porto, Portugal. During their visit to São Tomé, they took time to engage with local associations, including ours. Our children had the opportunity to meet these Portuguese high school students and form friendships through some exciting chess matches! We’re already looking forward to the upcoming "2025 rematch." Stay tuned to our blog for more details!
MAKING OUR OWN EQUIPMENT
No shop or donations? No problem! With help from a friend and chess referee, we received some chess pieces and are now crafting our own boards.
