KARATE & JEET KUNE DO

KARATE FOR THE CHILDREN

Since Spring 2024, we have been offering Karate classes for children in Bairro do Hospital. As the children have school during the week, the Karate lessons are held on weekends, Saturday afternoons, and Sunday mornings.

Classes take place in the teacher's home courtyard, and whenever possible, at the nearby beach.

Soon, we will begin the belt grading process, and the students' efforts will be rewarded with colored belts reflecting their level of learning.

We will also need kimonos. So, if you have some space in your luggage, think of us!

TEACHER JOÃO

Our teacher, João, is a well-trained martial artist who has studied Karate and Jeet Kune Do with local masters in Santo Antonio.

After moving to Bairro do Hospital, he graciously accepted the challenge of starting these classes.

So far, we are thrilled with the results. Dozens of children, including some girls, are taking Karate classes, and about twenty young adults are participating in the Jeet Kune Do classes.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF KARATE

Practicing a martial art undoubtedly yields numerous benefits for the growth of a young person. Let's take a moment to revisit them!

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR SUPPORT !

JEET KUNE DO FOR YOUNG ADULTS

In same time as we opened the Karate lessons, our Teacher Mr João offered to create a course dedicated to the young adults also living in the Bairro do Hospital.

Since many of them work or study during the day, we decided to organize the classes in the evening. Thanks to our volunteer Lucas, who visited in 2023, we have gloves, mouth guards and other useful equipment to train.

Now there are more than 20 students learning, and their skills are improving every day !

HOW TO HELP

When traveling to São Tomé, it's worth considering bringing along some equipment!

Gloves, mouthguards, kicking pads, and kimonos are all greatly appreciated.

Once all students are equipped, we'll also need white, yellow, and orange belts.

These items are not very expensive and can often be sourced second-hand from martial arts clubs in your neighborhood. Just share our information with them so they know these items will be put to good use!

It's another simple way to help, at a very minimal cost!
